Blocked ears are more than just an inconvenience. If you are struggling with muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in your ear, tinnitus, earache or dizziness, a build-up of ear wax could be the cause. The good news is that professional ear wax removal is a fast, safe and highly effective treatment that can restore your hearing almost immediately.
At Elite Health & Urgent Care in Hailsham, we offer both microsuction and ear irrigation, the two gold standard methods of professional ear wax removal. In this guide we explain the difference between them, what to expect at your appointment, and how to know which treatment is right for you.
What Is Ear Wax and Why Does It Build Up?
Ear wax, known medically as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands inside your ear canal. It serves an important purpose; trapping dust, bacteria and debris to protect the delicate structures of the inner ear. In most people, ear wax moves naturally out of the ear canal on its own.
However, in some people ear wax accumulates faster than it clears, leading to a blockage. This is more likely if you:
- Have naturally narrow or curved ear canals
- Use cotton buds, which push wax deeper rather than removing it
- Wear hearing aids or use in-ear headphones regularly
- Are older; wax tends to become drier and harder to shift with age
- Swim regularly, as water can cause wax to swell and block the canal
- Have a history of ear infections or previous ear surgery
Once a blockage forms, it can cause symptoms including muffled or reduced hearing, a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds), earache, itching, dizziness and in some cases a mild cough.
Should I Use Cotton Buds to Remove Ear Wax?
No. This is one of the most important things to understand about ear wax. Cotton buds do not remove wax, they push it further into the ear canal, compacting it against the eardrum and making the blockage significantly worse. The NHS and all major audiological bodies advise against putting anything inside your ear canal, including cotton buds, fingers or ear candles.
The safest and most effective approach is to use softening drops to prepare the wax for removal, followed by professional treatment by a trained clinician.
Professional Ear Wax Removal – Your Options
There are two main methods of professional ear wax removal, both of which are available at our Hailsham clinic:
Microsuction
Microsuction is widely regarded as the safest and most comfortable method of ear wax removal available. It uses a small, low-pressure suction device to gently draw wax out of the ear canal under direct visualisation using a microscope or loupe magnification.
How microsuction works: Your clinician will look into your ear using magnification to assess the blockage. A fine suction tube is then gently inserted into the ear canal and the wax is carefully suctioned out. The procedure is precise, controlled and does not involve any water or liquid.
Advantages of microsuction:
- Safe for people with perforated eardrums or a history of ear surgery
- No water involved – suitable for people with ear infections or skin conditions
- Immediate results in most cases
- Minimal discomfort – most patients describe a gentle suction sensation
- Clinician can see exactly what they are doing throughout the procedure
- Can be performed even without pre-softening drops in many cases
Is microsuction uncomfortable? Most patients find microsuction very comfortable. The suction device makes a gentle noise which some people find slightly unusual, but there is no pain. The procedure typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the severity of the blockage.
Ear Irrigation
Ear irrigation, sometimes called ear syringing, uses a gentle, controlled flow of warm water to flush wax out of the ear canal. Modern irrigation uses an electronic irrigator rather than the older metal syringes, making the process more comfortable and safer than it once was.
How ear irrigation works: Warm water is gently directed into the ear canal at a controlled pressure, dislodging and flushing the wax out. The water and wax drain into a small basin held beneath the ear. The temperature of the water is carefully matched to body temperature to prevent dizziness.
Advantages of ear irrigation:
- Effective for soft or semi-soft wax
- Comfortable for most patients
- Well established and widely used method
- Particularly effective when wax has been pre-softened with drops
When is irrigation not suitable? Ear irrigation is not recommended for people with a perforated eardrum, a history of ear surgery, an active ear infection, or certain other ear conditions. Your clinician will assess your suitability before treatment.
Microsuction vs Irrigation — Which Is Right for Me?
Both methods are safe and effective when performed by a trained clinician. The right choice depends on your individual circumstances:
| Microsuction | Irrigation | |
| Perforated eardrum | Safe | Not suitable |
| Active ear infection | Safe | Not suitable |
| History of ear surgery | Safe | Seek advice first |
| Hard, impacted wax | Very effective | Less effective |
| Soft wax | Effective | Very effective |
| Pre-softening drops needed | Sometimes | Always recommended |
| Water involved | No | Yes |
At Elite Health & Urgent Care, our clinicians will assess your ear and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation. In some cases a combination of both methods may be used.
Preparing for Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment
To get the best results from your appointment, we strongly recommend using ear softening drops for three to five days before you come in. This softens the wax and makes it significantly easier to remove, particularly if the blockage has been present for some time.
Suitable softening options include:
- Olive oil drops – a natural and effective option, available from any pharmacy
- Sodium bicarbonate drops – available over the counter, particularly effective for harder wax
- Dedicated ear wax softening drops – such as Otex or Earex, available from pharmacies
Apply two or three drops into the affected ear twice a day for three to five days before your appointment, lying on your side for a few minutes after application to allow the drops to penetrate.
If you are in significant discomfort or have suddenly lost hearing in one ear, please call us on 0300 304 6260 and we will advise whether to come in sooner.
What Happens If Ear Wax Is Left Untreated?
If a wax blockage is left untreated, symptoms are likely to worsen over time. The wax can become more impacted and harder to remove, and prolonged blockage can increase the risk of ear infections. Persistent tinnitus caused by wax blockage can also have a significant impact on quality of life and sleep.
Professional removal is straightforward, quick and effective, there is no reason to put it off.

Can I Get Ear Wax Removal on the NHS?
NHS ear wax removal services have been significantly reduced in recent years. Many GP surgeries in England no longer offer ear irrigation or microsuction, and patients are instead advised to use over-the-counter softening drops. For many people this is insufficient, leaving private clinics as the most accessible option for effective treatment.
Private ear wax removal with Elite Health is fast, affordable and available with same-day appointments – making it a practical solution for the thousands of people in East Sussex who can no longer access this treatment through their GP.
Ear Wax Removal FAQs
How long does ear wax removal take? Most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes. This includes an initial assessment of both ears before treatment begins.
Does ear wax removal hurt? Neither microsuction nor irrigation should be painful. Microsuction produces a gentle suction sensation and some noise. Irrigation involves warm water which is generally very comfortable. If you experience significant discomfort at any point, tell your clinician and they will stop immediately.
How soon will I notice an improvement? Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their hearing as soon as the wax is removed. Some patients experience a slight sensitivity or adjustment period for a day or two as the ear canal adapts.
How often do I need ear wax removal? This varies from person to person. Some people need treatment once a year, others more frequently. Your clinician can advise based on how quickly your wax tends to accumulate.
Can both ears be treated at the same appointment? Yes. We routinely treat both ears at the same appointment where needed.
Do I need a GP referral? No. You can book directly with us without a referral.
What if the drops haven’t softened the wax enough? If softening drops have not been sufficient, microsuction can often still be performed effectively. Your clinician will assess on the day and advise if further softening is needed before treatment.
